BALLARD/CARLISLE HISTORICAL & GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY

Meeting Minutes 22 February 2010

MEETING CALLED TO ORDER 6:15 pm

MEMBERS IN ATTENDANCE:  Gerald Wells, Roy Duncan, Monica Burnett, Margaret Dunn, Phyllis Hester, Zane Teeters, Wilma Lanier, Murray Akers.

PREVIOUS MEETING MINUTES:  Sent out to all members earlier

TREASURER’S REPORT: Zane Teeters:  our current assets are only $2600 due to the purchase of the new copying machine, maintenance contract on the microfilm viewers, very slow book sales, and shrinking membership.

CORRESPONDING SECRETARY’S REPORT:  Margaret Dunn:  10 books sold.  A book was received as a gift from the author/compiler:  Williamson County, Illinois Birth Records, 1877, 1878, 1879, Vol. 1 by Mary Jo Moore, 105 Cassie Circle, West Paducah, KY 42086.  Our thanks to Ms. Moore.  Inquiries are attached.

BOOK COMMITTEE REPORT:  Murray Akers:  we now have all 5 Volumes of Kentucky Soldiers and their Regiments in the Civil War.  We also now have Ballard and Carlisle Obituaries from 2008 and 2009 available.

There is a new binder with old Postcards From Western Kentucky which were obtained from the internet.  If  any members have postcards of their own and would like to add them please scan or copy and send to Murray Akers – makers012@windstream.net, or c/o BCHGS, P.O. Box 279, Wickliffe, KY 42087.

OLD BUSINESS:

The oft-postponed discussion of alternating our meetings between Ballard and Carlisle was on the Agenda.  Zane Teeters, as Head of the Carlisle County Museum and Library has offered their facility as a meeting site at no charge to the Society.  Discussion was interesting.  Some Pro:  at one time we did alternate between Bardwell and Wickliffe, but the Bardwell site charged us for use of their facility, so the membership voted to meet only at Wickliffe.  Zane indicated that certain Carlisle members dropped their membership at that time.  Because of the Ballard-only meeting site??   Who knows?  Whatever, it was agreed that a strong publicity campaign would be necessary to generate renewed interest on the part of Carlisle County residents in the Society.  Some Con:  we would not have our resources available at the Bardwell site, and some visitors/potential members might be little impressed by not seeing our extensive resources.  On the other hand, how often do we have visitors/potential members at our meeting?

Zane indicated that a program for publicity of the Society and a potential Carlisle meeting site would be developed and reported at a later date.  I’m sending these Minutes to former Society members who reside in Carlisle to give you an opportunity to indicate to us if the suggested change in venue would encourage you to re-join our Society.

This is an opportunity for you to give the Society the benefit of your guidance.  Let’s hear from you!!

 NEW BUSINESS:

You’ve noticed that the front entrance to the building is blocked off.  Due to the many leaks in the building, the floor in the foyer has become considered by the Judge-Executive to be dangerous and she has therefore elected to keep the front entrance closed.  Sonya has provided me (Murray) with a key to the rear door.

Some new rules to our use of the building (which, officially, belongs to the County):  We are still welcome to stay and work after Sonya or Crystal leave in the afternoon, HOWEVER, they will lock the rear door as they leave and it will be up to us to BE SURE that door is locked when we leave – and the lights are turned off – and the heat/A/C is turned off, and the basement door is locked and the lights turned off.   Sonya advised that during the past couple of weeks she’s found the rear door unlocked and lights in the basement on.  Remember, we’re here by sufferance of the Library and we must play by their rules.

ROOTSDIGGER:  Phyllis Hester:  the Spring Issue is completed and will be

            assembled and mailed very soon.

Members are encouraged to continue to send material to Phyllis for possible

inclusion in future ROOTSDIGGERS:  okcphyl@cox.net or c/o BCHGS, P.O.Box 279, Wickliffe, KY 42087.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Phyllis Hester has volunteered to be our new PUBLICITY CHAIRMAN.  Thank you, Phyllis!

Honorary Member Dr. Ken Carstens has recently received a grant to study the Gardens at Monticello, Thomas Jefferson’s estate in Virginia.  Congratulations to Ken!

There will be what appears to be an excellent Conference presented by the Federation of Genealogical Societies in Knoxville, Tennessee, August 18-21, titled Rediscovering America’s First Frontier.  There are many, many presentations scheduled which would benefit our Society, but the estimated total cost of $1,000 is probably prohibitive.  For more information contact FGS at www.fgs.org or, phone 888-3471500, fax 8663471350, Email office@fss.org.

NBC-TV will begin a new mini-series this Friday – Who Do You Think You Are?  This will be a 6 or 7 week presentation of various well-known personalities as they investigate their genealogical background – with some genuine SURPRISES for some of them.  TUNE IN!!  Fridays at 7PM CST (after Daylight Time begins, check your local listings).  This should be a great spur of interest to some people who may not have cared a hang before about where they came from!!

AS ALWAYS, WE ARE IN NEED OF NEW TABLE DISPLAYS.  Wilma Lanier has a nice one in place for March but we need MORE!
