March

BALLARD/CARLISLE HISTORICAL &

GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY

MEETING MINUTES 22 MARCH 2010

MEETING CALLED TO ORDER 6:10 pm.

PRESENT:  Margaret Dunn, Kenny Crice, Monica Burnett, Roy Duncan, Phyllis Hester, Murray Akers.  Visitor:  Donnie Lanier

PREVIOUS MINUTES:  were mailed or Emailed to all paid-up members.

TREASURER’S REPORT:  Zane Teeters is absent.  No Report.

CORRESPONDING SECRETARY’S REPORT:  Margaret Dunn.

10 books sold.  Have a request from the Public Library of Cincinnati to purchase copies of 7 RootsDigger from the early to mid-2000s.  It was moved and seconded to provide these @$5.00 each.  While this is a departure from our policy the RootsDiggers are not for sale, it was agreed that, since this request is from the Genealogical Department of a Public Library, a variance would be acceptable.

BOOK COMMITTEE REPORT:  Murray Akers – no activity to report.

OLD BUSINESS:

Alternating Meeting sites between Ballard and Carlisle:

Zane had indicated at our previous meeting that he would work towards coming up with a plan to promote interest on the part of the membership, and, especially, try to interest those former members who dropped out of the Society when we did stop alternating the sites some years ago.  Zane is absent tonight.

Just a reminder that Phyllis Hester has volunteered to be Publicity Chairman.  The Chair provided her with a copy of the “Official Duties” of that position.

NEW BUSINESS:

The Chair wishes to discuss a new “Publicity Campaign”.  Betty Johnson has kindly sent me some suggestions, several of which I’d hoped to talk about earlier.

TOPICS:

Solicit all local newspapers and the Paducah Sun to include our meeting schedule in any calendars they may provide (in the paper).

Phyllis will contact Betty to be sure all papers are contacted (Betty has been kind enough to handle several of the papers on an unofficial basis).

Confirm with the Ballard Chamber of Commerce that they still carry our meeting information on their web site.  Advised Phyllis that Beth Ann Hunt is now the Executive Director, 270/665-8277.

Solicit the local papers (excluding the Sun) to publish, a little at a time, a listing of our resources, maybe weekly, maybe monthly.

Let’s solicit SCHOOL YEARBOOKS.  Get the papers to publish a list of the Yearbooks we have, along with a request for donation of others.

Same with Church Histories.  We have many Church Histories, but I’m sure there are a lot out there, that we don’t have.

Re-institute “Footsteps in Time”.

All of the above will be discussed at length at our next meeting, 26 April 2010.

We received an interesting article from member Donna Sams Brown on the Sams family for possible inclusion in a future RootsDigger.  Thank you, Donna.  We encourage all members to send such material to Phyllis Hester at okcphyl@cox.net or c/o BCHGS, P.O.Box 279, Wickliffe, KY 42087.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

The Chair has appointed Monica Burnett to be our Librarian.  Specific duties will be submitted to a future meeting for discussion and consideration.

We encourage your support of the Carlisle County Museum & Library on Front Street in Bardwell.  www.carlisleconnection.com.

Our own web site may be reached www.ballard-carlisle-ky-genealogy.com.

There will be several more of the “Who Do You Think You Are?” presentations.  These genealogical searches by well-known personalities should generate a lot of interest in genealogy.  7:00 PM CDT Fridays on NBC stations.

On a personal note:  while very randomly browsing through the Ballard County Ancestor Charts, the Chair noted that a Ballard/Carlisle County family – Mabry/Mayberry/etc. – included as an ancestor, William McGuffey Rives, Dinwiddie County, VA, 1767-1788.  M’Gosh!!  The Chair has an ancestor, same name and dates!  So here I am, previously with no known close connections to western Kentucky  other than the Ray Akers family (about whom I knew nothing when we moved here 12 years ago), with a direct connection to any of the Mabrys or Mayberry’s in the area.

Then, as I continued to go through the Charts, lo & behold, Lovey Raburn, beloved long-time teacher in Carlisle County, shows the same ancestor – William McGuffey Rives!!   So there’s another totally unexpected ancestral connection to western Kentucky  And, remember, all of my own direct family were Yankees ‘til some of us learned better!
