JOHNSON-DAWSON-HALL-VAUGHN-McCORMICK-HENDRICKS –
Christine HEATON (houdinicj@embarqmail.com) has reached a dead end on her JOHNSON-DAWSON-HALL lines in Ballard and Carlisle counties in the 1880s. Ben JOHNSON (b. 1858 KY) married Nanny (Anne) DAWSON (b. 5 APR 1864KY) in Ballard Co. on or about 10 MAY 1880. They had two children, Rose Ann JOHNSON (b. 5 MAR 1880 Ballard Co., KY), and Wesley Franklin JOHNSON (b. 1 APR 1884 Bardwell, Carlisle Co., KY). In the 1880 Federal Census it appears Ben JOHNSON and wife Nanny (no daughter Rose Ann) seem to be living on the farm owned by Ben’s uncle, David HALL, in Magisterial Dist. 4. Ben is presumed to have died between 1885 and 1888 when Nanny remarried. Nanny was the ward of W. C. HENDRICKS, who gave his permission for her marriage according to the Orphans Court records of 1880. She may be the daughter of Winney VAUGHN, and may have a half-sister Sarah (Mrs. Jo) McCORMICK and half-brother George VAUGHN. Any help appreciated!
ROSS/BROWN/HENDERSON (correction from March query)
Jane Ross Johnson (janeellenjohnson@comcast.net) is looking for her father’s birth certificate. He was known as Harlon Ross, but may have also been known as Harlon Brown. His mother's name was Ethel Ross. Her mother's name was Mollie Henderson Ross and her father's name was William Ross. They lived in Ballard County and were African-American. Ethel Ross moved to Pulaski County Illinois some time in the 30's. Jane just can't find any birth records on him. She has a copy of her mother's wedding certificate. He married her in 1940; it stated that he was 27 years old, which would make him born in 1913 or 1914. He died and was buried in South Bend, Indiana. His mother died in Detroit Michigan.
HENDERSON/TERRELL/CRICE
This is a second or third request from Carl Highgate (clowbridge@msn.com) that Wilma has been working on. Here is a copy received April 4, 2010, which is very similar to the ones received earlier.
“I would like to get a person to search for Death Records for my Great Grandparents Henry & Angeline Henderson nee Terrell & Henry's mother Mariah Henderson. They were listed as living in Ballard Co.in the US 1880 Census along with their children. In Dec. 1883 Angeline remarried to Randle Crice of Ballard Co. as shown on a Marriage Cert. Therefore Henry must have died between 1880-1883 and Henry's mother Maria probably died in the same timeframe because in the 1880 Census Mariah was 60 years old. Angeline & Randle in 1887 had a son "Willy" and in 1900 Randle is listed as widowed and just living with his son. Therefore Angeline must have died between 1887-1900.I am hoping that a Death Cert. exist in Wickliffe which would show both parents names of Henry Henderson,(Mariah & her husband) & Angeline Henderson or Angeline Crice parents’ names.”
JETT/GHOLSON
Request by Terry Strick (tmstrick817@bellsouth.net) via Betty Johnson:
“I have started doing a little more research on dad's side and find my brother and I are also descended from the family surname "Jett". William Edward Parker, the father of grandmother Katie Bell, is the son of George W. Parker and Virginia Alda Jett. I have confirmed this through some land transaction records at the Ballard Co., Courthouse. I'm just getting started on this line, but noticed a couple of "Jett" surnames buried at Mt. Pleasant. Not sure of their relationship yet.
However, Virginia Jett's father is Edward R. Jett and mother Delilah P. "Gholson" Jett (again, land records). Edward Jett's death certificate says he is buried in the "family cemetery." I don't know where that would be, but found his sister, Elizabeth (Lizzia) "Jett" Gholson buried at a Hazelwood Cemetery in Barlow. She apparently married a Stephen Gholson (her mother's maiden name) hummm, because her death certificate is as a Gholson. I was wondering if you had ever heard of or seen listings of the "Jett" or "Gholson" family, or a listing of the Hazelwood Cemetery in Barlow where at least one of them is buried?”
STEPHENS
Query received by Murray Akers from Hershel at jrcornwell1@yahoo.com on Bernie Stephens. Here is Murray’s reply: “From Kentucky Death Records I've found:
Bernie Stephens b. 8 Jan1904,Ballard County, KY; d. 30 Nov 1936, Wickliffe, Ballard County, KY.
Spouse: Hattie C. Stephens
Father: Sherwood B. Stephens
Mother: Sue Anna Dublin
Informant: Hubert (?), Wickliffe
Also found a George B. Stephens, b. Abt. 1848, d. 21 Aug 1935, Ballard County, KY.
And Nellie Pearl Stephens, b. 3 Jun 1879, d. 19 Dec 1953. She was daughter of Peter Sibert Stephens (1830-1917) and Mary Ann Elliston (1841-1919)
I could find no picture of Bernie Stephens.
I could find nothing on Will or Mario? (not sure of the note-taker's spelling) Stephens.
--I can verify that there was a Gum Corner School, but we have NO other information. We assume it was at or near Gum Corner Church, on which we have quite a lot, but no mention is made of the School in the Church material.”
MOSLEY
Query from Ann Wallis (georgie1588@sbcglobal.net) via Betty Johnson, regarding Louisa Jane Mosley and husband Thomas Mosley. Wilma Lanier researched and found info on them in Old Barlow Cemetery. Murray has also sent info.
CANE CREEK SCHOOL – Member Carole Emmons(garyemmons@peoplepc.com) wants to know if there is research on one-room schools in Ballard County and in particular Cane Creek School history and its location.
SULLIVAN
Troy Sullivan (tsully980@aol.com) wants information on Elijah Sullivan’s parents, who “may have been” Uriah and Martha Sullivan. Elijah Sullivan and wife Sarah Jane Goins show up in the Ballard 1880 census, but he can’t find anything on Elijah or Sarah before or after the 1880 census. He believes Elijah Sullivan is the “Elijah Sullivan”who is buried at Mt. Zion Cemetery just outside Mayfield KY and shows him born April 1823. Any help appreciated.
